چکیده

n Sub-Saharan Africa, infant, child and maternal mortalities are very high compared to other regions. We estimate a cross-country empirical model of the determinants of those mortalities. We find, similar to other studies, that in addition to per capita GDP, health and education interventions can affect mortalities, however, the effect depends on the mortality rate being modelled. Importantly, the prevalence of the adult HIV/AIDS infection rate is detrimentally impacting mortality in the Sub-Saharan region.

The Challenges of Maternal and Child Nutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan African countries have recorded poor statistical indices of nutritional progress more than any other continent, except in a few cases when compared with some Asian countries. High incidences of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality have dotted the landscape in this region, with myriads of challenges. Poor maternal and infant nutrition have been associated directly and indirect...

Association between coverage of maternal and child health interventions, and under-5 mortality: a repeated cross-sectional analysis of 35 sub-Saharan African countries

Background Infant and child mortality rates are among the most important indicators of child health, nutrition, implementation of key survival interventions, and the overall social and economic development of a population. In this paper, we investigate the role of coverage of maternal and child health (MNCH) interventions in contributing to declines in child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Des...

Household structure, maternal characteristics and childhood mortality in rural sub-Saharan Africa.

Inequalities in child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa: A social epidemiologic framework

In the past twenty years or so, the study of the determinants of child survival in low-income countries has been based on demographic conceptual frameworks. In that framework, the key concept was a set of proximate determinants, or intermediate variables, that directly influence the risk of morbidity and mortality. It assumes tha...

Progress towards Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5: strengthening human resources for maternal, newborn and child health

Since the 1990s, developing countries as a whole have made remarkable efforts to reduce under-five mortality rate from 90 to 48 deaths per thousand live births in 2012. As a result, the number of annual under-five deaths dropped by nearly 6 million during that period [1,2]. Unfortunately, the pace of reduction was slowest in sub-Saharan Africa, making it impossible that the region will reach th...
